Investors have a challenge in being able to discriminate the mountain of investment ideas presented to them and potential technologies which threaten to disrupt the current paradigm. But, as with any technology, their success is not a foregone conclusion. They will have to prove themselves as a more cost-effective, more robust, seamlessly interoperable, and generally better alternative to technologies already in the market.
To alleviate the “information overload” problem, Investech presents an unbiased perspective that provides more than the financial or technology industry “consensus view”. Our products and services provide company and industry information, plus that incremental piece of knowledge (we call it Insight ), drawn from our experience and contacts in the industry ("walking the talk" if you like), that the client would not have been able to obtain from any other source! This information could mean the difference to the success or failure of an enterprise (and therefore an investment).
Undeniably the Internet has changed the world of communications and we can't put the genie back in the bottle. The enormous growth in data traffic and the convergence of traffic forms has forced the need for the Next Generation of intelligent transport and switching technologies based on photonics. The quest is now for optical intelligence - the fusion of the networking layers of the OSI stack with the physical optical switching/transport layer. This Next Generation Network will use IP (Internet Protocol) to manage and control the optical transport and network layer bringing about an Optical based Internet.
The Enterprise and the way we do business is changing. The Enterprise has become dependent on the corporate intranet, extranet and access to the internet and has become both the source and destination of much of the IP traffic generated in the telecommunications backbones. More new information will be created over the next few years than has already been created over the entire history of mankind. Enterprise storage brings forth the demand for large data storage, but also the need for timely access, management and control of the information.
Moreover, this new era of technological change is also causing a tremendous shift in human relationships as we move from episodic to "always on". The tremendous take up of mobile wireless is fuelling the bandwidth demands on the network.
The Next Generation of Broadband Wireless technologies has emerged that promises to deliver wireline equivalent broadband services at a fraction of the cost, in a fraction of the time. Armed with a robust OFDM air interface and Intelligent Antennas that will help bring about further increases in range and throughput and meet user demands for flexibility, scalability and mobility.
We're also witnessing the beginnings of a titanic clash between the internet and the telecommunications industry.
The Internet, as a creature of the computer and networking industry, grows as a function of applications enabled by the connectivity. What makes the Internet most attractive is that all future innovations are simply plugged in at the edge of the network. Some applications require more capacity and performance than others, but the beauty of the situation is that no one pays as a function of time and or geographical location.
Technologies like VoIP is the fastest growing telecommunications product in the market, with the capacity to replace the home and business fixed telephone lines. VoIP is the killer deployment that signals the start of the Next Generation Networks that will completely transform the telecommunications landscape as we have known it. VoIP is somewhat like an iceberg, where significant development is going on beneath the surface yet is unseen. And while the market is fragmented it has the potential to both develop and coalesce quickly and be a major threat. It's already begun.
There's been a lot of talk about how all the Telecom operators are now focused on becoming "triple play" providers, offering "voice, video and data." The explosion in high-speed IP networks and as convergence progresses between IP-based communication and broadcasting areas, demands for interactive high quality services are increased. Triple Play Services appears to satisfy the customer expectation.
In the end however, it's not about "voice, video and data." That's misleading. Voice and video are just data. The job of a Telecom Operator is really about being logistics companies for data, helping the right data to be at the right place at the right time.
